CARNAGE Motives Guide

A motive is Xebeth’s way of making someone impatient. CARNAGE does not assign a hidden killer at spawn. Someone has to choose a weapon. Motives are the pressure that makes that choice feel cheaper than waiting. This page is the catalog. The rules of becoming Blackened still sit on how to play.

Not every chapter rolls a motive. Hunger ticks either way. When a motive does land, read it. Players who ignore the letter and then look shocked in Trial are volunteering as the story’s fool.

Motive Letter

The classic: Xebeth hands one participant a letter. Kill, or you die. The item is real — it shows up in the same miscellany list as Cola and the Xebeth File. Full item text is on items. If you receive it, you have a timed obligation, not a suggestion. If you see someone suddenly hunting furniture after a host speech, they may be holding paper.

Spotless play against a letter is boring and correct: stay public, watch who peels toward isolated rooms, and do not eat private snacks. Blackened play with a letter is to pick a quiet weapon fast. Gloves and C9 beat a panic Gun. Weapons ranks the evidence cost.

Coins motive

A later ALPHA patch added a Coins motive. The host leans on the shop economy: kill (or win the vote) because money is on the line. It does not print a physical letter every time. It does make greedy players louder. Affluent Progeny already doubles coins and tickets; a coins motive on that Ultimate is extra bait. Do not announce the double. Spend the extra after the match on the shop.

Coins from a correct Trial vote still pay without a motive. The motive is flavor and pressure, not a new currency. Currencies is the income page.

Friendship motive

A map-refresh patch added a nastier hook: the host tells you to kill somebody or your friend dies. Friendship levels are a separate bar you build by talking to other participants during daily life. Creators still argue whether repeating the same conversation farms it. Until NECR0POLlS writes a tooltip, treat friendship as “people you actually spoke to,” not a spreadsheet.

If you are the threatened friend, you are not automatically safe. You are a hostage in someone else’s UI. Stay visible. If you are the player holding the motive, killing your actual friend is how you get voted in ten seconds. Kill a loud stranger with a low-evidence tool, or refuse and accept the penalty if you would rather lose the chapter than the lobby’s trust.

Friendship is also why some lobbies suddenly go quiet after a host line. That silence is information. Put it in a Truth Bullet note during investigation.

Hunger, five minutes, and music

Hunger is the always-on motive. Low hunger cuts sprint. Area 3 is starved on purpose. Cola restores a little; steak restores a lot; Cook cheats. Chemist exists because C9 lives in food. Hunger blur was nerfed in a later patch; it still matters. Eat in public.

The five-minute countdown used to start earlier. Newer builds start it after about fifteen minutes, then play intense music and tell you there are five minutes left to kill. That is a chapter-wide motive, not a private letter. Expect a messy body. Report fast. Do not start a side quest in Area 5 vents.

Nighttime blackouts and dorm loggers exist because these clocks push kills into dark rooms. If the music hits, walk toward people, not away from them, unless you are already Blackened and cleaning.

What motives do not do

They do not skip Trial. They do not make a wrong vote legal. They do not unlock Survivor. They do not replace map knowledge. A letter is not an alibi. “I had a motive” is a confession with extra steps unless you also show why the evidence points at someone else.

After the motive resolves — kill, timeout, or friend penalty — the match is still the three-survivor finish on how to win. Xebeth is not going to hand you a medal for following instructions.

  • Items — Motive Letter and Xebeth File as objects
  • Investigation — how to catch the person who just got pressured
  • Blackened — what to do if you accept the kill
  • Updates — which motive shipped in which patch

Motives are Xebeth being impatient. You can still refuse. The game just makes refusal expensive.

Wiki FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for this CARNAGE page.

What is the Motive Letter in CARNAGE?

A letter from Xebeth that forces one player to kill or die. It is an item, not a hidden role card. See items.

What is the friendship motive?

A later patch can threaten a friend you built a friendship level with: kill someone or that friend dies. Talking during daily life raises the bar.

When does the five-minute kill countdown start?

Newer builds start it after about fifteen minutes, then play intense music. Confirm the timer on your server.

Does a motive make me the assigned killer?

No. Everyone still starts Spotless. A motive pressures a choice. You become Blackened only when a victim dies by your hand.
